Abstract | This article discusses the role of language laboratories in foreign language teaching as developed in Germany. Five principal advantages are presented: (1) intensification of learning through active language use, (2) individualization of instruction, (3) objectification of evaluation, (4) improved control for teacher and student, and (5) creation of a more comprehensive program. After reviewing aspects of technical organization and assessing the chief importance of language laboratories at elementary, intermediate, and advanced levels, the author mentions some of the drawbacks of lab work, inlcuding the dangers of overuse, the shortage of good programs, equipment failure, and the limited suitability for group conversation, written work, and advanced material. A conclusion treating educational goals discusses problems of skill transfer and importance of speech as the basis for instruction. References--some annotated--are included. (Author/RS) |
